Fairfield, Alabama - Shoppers at Western Hills Mall are seeing some exciting changes in the form of a major teardown and reconstruction project. Demolition of the old JCPenney building began today which officially kicked-off the redevelopment of the mall that will include a brand new 183,000 square foot Wal-Mart Supercenter. Construction of the mall’s new anchor store will begin immediately with an opening slated for 2006.
“When the new Wal-Mart Supercenter opens here next fall, you will see a totally transformed and improved Western Hills Mall that will provide a greater retail offering to the community in a convenient and attractive setting,” stated Owen Aronov, President of Aronov Realty Management, Inc. who manages and leases the mall.
The new Wal-Mart Supercenter will be built facing Aaron Aronov Drive and Martin Luther King Drive with convenient access to the mall’s new west entrance with a new pedestrian walkway. Enhancements and improvements to the mall parking areas will include new lighting, recoating and restriping of the entire parking area for improved traffic flow and added parking convenience.
The mall redevelopment will be carried out with little or no inconvenience to retailers or shoppers. All stores will remain open during regular operating hours.
“It is estimated that the new Western Hills Mall Wal-Mart Supercenter will generate approximately $5.2 million in sales and ad valorem tax revenue on an annual basis,” stated Mr. Aronov. “This significant increase in tax dollars represents additional funding that can be used by the city, county and state to provide services to the community,” he continued.
The new Wal-Mart Supercenter will more than double its employee base from 200 employees at the current location to more than 400 at the new Western Hills Mall location. Approximately 80% of the 400+ employees will be full time positions. And every Wal-Mart associate, whether full time or part time, will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package.
The new Wal-Mart Supercenter will feature 36 general merchandise departments, including a complete apparel department with accessories, an extensive jewelry department, a lawn and garden center, a full line of electronics, a large health and beauty aids department, and a pharmacy. In addition, the grocery area features a bakery, delicatessen, frozen food department, meat department, fresh produce section, and a dairy department.
